The South Bay Saints (www.southbaysaints.com) are a summer collegiate baseball team organized by Coach Murphy Su’a, former Head Coach of the Cal State University at Dominguez Hills Toros baseball program. They participate in the California Collegiate League and are assembled with college players throughout the nation that return to Los Angeles during the summer.
For most of the Rissho student-athletes, this will be their first visit to the United States. In addition to the exhibition games, the trip will also fulfill part of their mandated educational requirements. Far East Baseball Exchange has arranged a tour of the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) and a tour and classroom visit at the University of Southern California (USC). At JANM, they will learn and appreciate America's ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. At USC, they will get a campus tour and sit in on a lecture by Dr. Jonathan Sum, PT, Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy and Professor Nicholas Cull of the Public Diplomacy Program.
They will also get the opportunity to do some sightseeing on their brief trip. They will spend a day in the Bay Area and visit with and watch former Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters manager Trey Hillman, the current bench coach of the Houston Astros, as they play the Oakland Athletics. Back in LA, they will tour Dodger Stadium and get an on field visit with Los Angeles Angels Manager Mike Scioscia.
No trip would be complete without a visit to the beach, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, shopping and the opportunity to feast on both World Famous Tommy’s and In-&-Out Burger. This trip was made possible through an arrangement between Rissho University and the Far East Baseball Exchange.
